Discipline Science

Earlier this week, I did a deep dive into a podcast with Dr. Mike Israetel around motivation, habits, and discipline.

He provides a powerful framework for thinking about adherence.

The constructs he discusses are thrown around all the time.

However, the way — and the order in which — he presents these constructs provide a mental framework for you as you work toward something.

Here’s a summary.

Inspiration
The thing that gets you to the mountain.

It’s cheap.

It’s quick.

And, it’s short-lived.

But, it’s essential because it gets you out the door.

Inspiration can be positive or negative.

It’s more effective when it’s positive.

Motivation
The goal-driven desire to do a thing — in this case, to get to the top of the mountain.

It’s the pull — and it’s important to know that it’s going to wax and wane.

What’s a goal?
Any kind of end state that is more preferable than a current state.

Something that is worthy of really giving yourself a pat on the back.

You can set yourself up for success here by being as specific and concrete as possible about the goal — make it tractable.

Intention
This is the boring & unsexy part.

It’s the bridge between what you want and what you get.

In essence, this is the plan — the steps you will take toward your goal.

It’s the willingness to sit down and put your pride on the line.

When it comes to the mountain, this is the specific path that you need to take — and the pace you need to keep — to get to the top.

Discipline
The tool to honor the intention.

This is what plays a key role when motivation waxes and wanes.

This is the squirt of extra juice in your battery of willpower.

This is what gets you through the excuses.

And, the more in you are on inspiration, motivation, and intention, the less discipline you need.

Habits
Are what make it all easier.

The systems that you build in your life to make it all flow.

The better your habits — the better your system — the more naturally it all unfolds.

I think it’s worth a listen.

Followed by action.

Onward.
